Tony returned from Venezuela
and continued to do good works in the Albany, New York area. Jim Ciullo
provided the following information about Tony's death in 1995.
"I spoke with someone from the Destefano Funeral Home in Amsterdam, NY,
and then with Tony's sister, Rosemary Liggero on Jan. 16, 1996 after hearing
that Tony was killed in an accident and after confirming this with the
Amsterdam Recorder, his hometown newspaper.
"His death occurred on or about July 21, 1995 at an intersection near P
street in Washington, D.C. It was a 25 mph zone. He was alone and within 10
minutes of his destination (his sister thought he was headed for some sort of
gathering of ex-PCV's). It was about 11 pm. Damage was found beneath his van.
Apparantly, police theorized that he may have hit a curb and that the air bag
opened causing him to hit his head. The blow to the head was the cause of
death. He did, however, survive about 2 days at George Washinton University
Hospital, but never regained consciousness.
"His 2 sisters from Amsterdam were called and did make it down to his
bedside before he actually died. An autopsy was performed and it did not
indicate any other potential cause of death.
"The funeral home informed me that donations in Tony's memory can be made
to:
The Shrine of the North American Martyrs, Auriesville, NY 12016-9999
The Funeral Home person indicated there was a plaque in his name at the Shrine,
and that it was a place which was very dear to Tony.
"Now that I have established contact with his sister, Rosemary, she will
try to send me any other relevant information. Since Tony was such a devout
Catholic, she would be pleased to received Mass Cards in his name. Her address
is:
Rosemary Liggero 9 Queen Anne Rd. Amsterdam, NY 12010
"He is buried in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Amsterdam, NY.
"We have lost a great friend, but his memory and his good works will live
on.
- Jim Ciullo"
